Resumen

Esta ponencia ofrece un análisis de la Revolución mexicana en su poco estudiada dimensión militar, ofreciendo una comparación con la guerra en Europa. Propone que ambas guerras fueron “totales”, por tanto es erróneo ver la Revolución como una “fiesta de balas” poco mortífera. Trata cinco temas: 1) el concepto de ‘guerra total’ (que incluye reclutamiento masivo y guerra industrial); 2) un análisis de la Revolución en estos términos (reclutamiento, bajas, costo demográfico y económico); 3) la transición de guerra ‘asimétrica’ a guerra convencional, c.1914; 4) la naturaleza de la guerra (en cuanto a tácticas, moral y armamentos); y 5) las consecuencias: la militarización, el legado de violencia y el papel de los veteranos en la política.
